30 years old…

June 26, 2013 by Mario Samora Leave a Comment

Thirty years old…. I have to admit that it’s very surreal! As mentioned in previous posts this year has simply flown by. Over the course of the last month things have been good. As always there is room for improvement. I have stalled out and I can’t seem to break that 230 mark.  On April 10th, I weighed in at 237 pounds. Since then, I have bounced around the 230’s but never breaking into the illusive 220’s.
I celebrated my 30th with a great workout at the FNS Training Center followed by a Softball game. This is a special day for me because its the first day I stepped foot in a gym when my journey got started just one year ago. Amazing to think that first day, it was a challenge to knock out 30 minuets on the elliptical and today I celebrated with a full workout and of course Birthday Burpees! 30 Burpees with two 30lbs dumbells!

My problem:

Losing weight when you weight 300+ pounds isn’t easy, but compared to shedding ounces at my current weight it sure feels like it. I have become a chronic snacker, and its evident by the lack of results that I have seen over the past 77 days. I go on throughout my day staying strong in the morning, but then comes the post lunch walk around the office and that’s when the trail mix, crackers, pretzels and granola bars that are provided by the office start to look like an amazing treat.  My company provides all of this stuff and my offices is literally within 15 feet of the snack table!  I grab a handful and then take a lap to talk to someone and before I know it, I have made 3-4 laps and ended up eating 3-4 handfuls of useless calories.  I am very aware of what I am doing but there exists this feeling of “its ok” because you are there….  I am not there and to be honest, not even close! 225 was the first goal, 215 is the second and I’ll bet when I reach that sub 200 will be the third goal.

My game plan:

Today marks my first day in my 30’s so I can’t think of a better time to start. I am putting myself on a 60 day challenge. Here is what I will accomplish over the next 60 days:

1.       I will not eat any snack food for the next 60 days.

2.       I will maintain 1800 calories a day (race days will be different)

3.       I will get in at least 5 workouts a week.

4.       I will consume 175+ grams of protein a day.

5.       I will have fun doing this!

What the future holds:

This Saturday I will be doing my 3rd Triathlon. It’s a sprint distance and I am eager to push myself to see just how fast I can complete this event.

Tough Mudder Tahoe is on July 13th. 12+ miles of mud, sweat, obstacles and pure badassness is waiting in the high elevation of Tahoe’s ski resort!

A Las Vegas Trip- Need I say more? This trip has nothing to do with Fitness but will require that I work out while in Las Vegas and stick to my above mentioned I wills for the next 60 days! Yes, I will be packing protein shakes and workout gear for a Vegas trip!

I am 77 days away from racing in my first ever 70.3 distance triathlon. I didn’t realize it was this close. The good news is, I feel prepared to complete the event. The bad news is I don’t feel like I am prepared enough to complete the event in the fashion I wish to complete it. Time to get on my bike and start climbing hills!

I am sure I will find a few more events over the course of the next 60 days, I can already think of another Triathlon that I might be doing so I am going to be a very busy guy!!!!
